18-year-old Briton Emma Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez of Canada in straight sets to win the first U.S. Open final between two teenagers since 1999

Back in late spring, in a leafy suburb of London, the Wimbledon wild-card committee took a gamble on a teenager who had never played in a major tennis tournament.

She was 18 years old and finished the 2020 season ranked No. 343 in the world. She was so obscure, even in tennis, that Wimbledon had initially refused her a spot. But when the All England Club changed its mind and invited Emma Raducanu into the main draw, it touched off a stunning string of events that culminated on Saturday in Queens.
