Elton John awarded surprise National Humanities Medal by President Joe Biden

White House military aide Maj. Bill Yang announced the U.K.-born singer was receiving the medal “for moving our souls with his powerful voice and one of the defining song books of all time. An enduring icon and advocate with absolute courage, who found purpose to challenge convention, shatter stigma and advance the simple truth — that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”

The concert, titled"A Night When Hope and History Rhyme," featured many references to John's contribution to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Biden praised the singer for his"fight against HIV/AIDS."
