Elon Musk says SpaceX reusable rockets could cost less than $1 million

, SpaceX's current partially reusable rocket, sheds its upper stage on each mission, the equivalent of a jet airplane, Musk noted.

Asked by his interviewer Kara Swisher when exactly this relatively cheap rocket, which is also intended to transport people to Mars, would be a reality, Musk glided past that reality check. Instead, he reiterated that such a transportation would"make the economics close for a self-sustaining city on Mars and a base on the moon."

Musk has spoken many times about getting people to Mars to build another civilization and make humanity"multiplanetary." On Tuesday, he pushed back against the idea that such efforts are really just a guise for"space tourism" that will be only accessible to the wealthy.

Ferdinand is spending most of his time now plotting various ways to surgically shorten Elon's ear lobes without him noticing.
