, who would have turned 89 on Feb. 27, lived multiple lives. She was a movie mega-star, a tabloid mega-celebrity , an innovator in creating herself as a brand — and a tireless and effective philanthropist and activist.

She also excelled in a wide array of films, like “Giant” , “Raintree Country” , “X, Y and Z” , “Ash Wednesday” , and “The Mirror Crack’d” , her last leading role on the big screen.Taylor made a name for herself as a teenager with “National Velvet” in 1944 and became a leading lady at age 18 with the 1950 “A Place in the Sun.” As she was gaining respect as an actress, she became a young widow when producer Mike Todd died in a 1958 plane crash.

In the last 30 years of her life, Taylor made few big screen appearances as she focused on other priorities. She appeared onstage in “The Little Foxes” and, with Burton in Noel Coward’s “Private Lives,” a comedy about a battling divorced duo. She and Warner divorced in 1982. A year later she entered Betty Ford Center for prescription drug and alcohol dependency, at a time when few celebrities would talk about such things.’s Army Archerd when he ran an item on July 23, 1985, saying Rock Hudson was being treated for AIDS. a wonderful woman who knew that disease does not discriminate~

Give the lady her due. She wasn’t just the star of Cleopatra. She is a Hollywood Legend! She fought issues - specifically for AIDS - when everyone turned away from it. She had her own battles but doesn’t diminish or lessen the Hollywood Queen she was.

What else can over the hill retired entertainment folks do?

AND one of the most BEAUTIFUL actresses ever !

Mr. Gray, your article chronicled her life to perfection. She was way ahead of the curve and the 'original reality show'. Interesting that you brought up the 'royals' as a comparison to the 60's/70's Liz & Dick frenzy, but again correct as a modern day comparison!

We are just knowing she was a tiredless and effective philanthropist before her death all the media always talked about were her over half a dozen Husbands anyways good to know

I can think of worse epitaphs. ❤️

I still wanna watch 'Cleopatra'. Shits long as hell though lol

Duh. Y'all late.

I thought AIDS was obsolete. Seeing that the LGBTQ community is thriving so. 😉
