The Nike Vaporfly seems to be a remarkable pair of trainers. Does it offer too much of a leg up?

But inspiring as it was, the master’s most recent performance will not feature in the official record books. Like Nike’s Breaking2 event, the Ineos 1:59 Challenge bent the rules of the IAAF, athletics’ governing body. The location and route were optimised to increase the likelihood of a sub-two-hour time, and a variety of start dates and times were kept open to prevent the weather from throwing a last-minute wrench in the plan.

under IAAF rules, most of that two-minute gain would vanish under even the most favourable non-exhibition circumstances. One of the biggest factors in Mr Kipchoge’s 1:59:40 display, however, is fully legal in official races. In Vienna he wore Nike’s latest advance in running-shoe technology: the Vaporfly Next. Its predecessor, the Vaporfly 4%, got its name from the shoemaker’s claim that it improves running efficiency by that margin, a staggering advance that has been.

gathara There's always some element of dissatisfaction with western media specifically on African success stories, there's always a questionable 'help' i wonder if it was a white runner would it be the same interest. What's the essence of innovation anyways?

This kind of statistics make one question the quality of journalism these days. Unless this is a paid advertisement of Nike. Which would make sense. But it should be disclosed in the post. The 2:02:57 is rather specific, no? Why not 59? How many marathon runners wear these shoes?

Yall are grasping at straws give this brother his due respect.

good ad

It's only about sponsorship. Give them a pair of tailored Adidas or Ascis they will still break the record

You keep chirping this and it’s as ignorant this time as in the three prior times. Equipment has evolved for decades - running shoes, tennis rackets, bicycle frames, golf clubs, hockey skates & sticks. Should all current winners get asterisks compared to the equip used in past?

have we resolved your drugs issues already? onto gear now?

So what? Shoe technology has improved over the years, and athletes have use those shoes. Eventually someone will make better shoe that these ones. No asterisk required.

How much are Nike paying you to run this story?

Or put another way: Nike pays athletes the most to wear its shoes.

is this sponcon

Wow!

Only four men have ever run a regulation marathon in under 2:02:57. They all had feet.

True, but this is not as rampant an issue as late 2000s with swimmers breaking world records left & right with full body Speedo LAZR racers

Nothing can change the fact that history has been made by Eluidkipchoge in the ineos159challenge.

Wtf does Nike have to do with this man’s success. All Nike has to say is we sponsored him. Stop exaggerating. That’s as worse as lying.

Why dont you try it?

It must be unless to be fairly idiot to force everyone to run in bear feet. Shoes (tennis shores) are a gear immanent by definition.

You are so bent on discrediting the black man by crediting white man shoes. Nike is racking is billions through advertising their shoes with the help of such Icons like Eliud. With sandals he can even do better. Well done Kenya and Africa.

Would like the author of this article to train for one week with Kipchoge....then rewrite the article from that perspective...

Rubbish!

Ityai mwari amana

Just try to imagine how good the times would have been had the race route gone through the south side of Chicago.

goddammit, don't rain on his parade. it is a landmark. and it's not like he was on steroids or something.

Y'all forgot too early that's it's the black man that did it

The only appropriate asterisk, is that it wasn't done in a competition. But, that is the case with MANY world records. Soon enough, he will break 2 hours in competition, and this aided in that effort. Congrats on a wonderful accomplishment.

Koenigsegg is the fastest production car in history. Why? because it carries 5.0L turbocharged V8 engine that produces 1140Hp. What's the difference?

Let people prosper, this is a 42km race. Requires the very extreme of human endurance

This is rubbish, what Eliud achieved was unique and unprecedented, don’t try and diminish his achievements

miskoom this stuff is beginning to have some legs.

Can’t really compare to an honest run can it. He had every enhancement and help known to man. An insult to Bannister to compare .

it is accepted in almost all sports, why singling out marathon?

To quote Paul Merton: “I’ll have a motorbike”.

What does this even mean? Like the expectation is people should go naked and barefoot in standardized temperature and humidity before it counts?

Regardless of the shoes, the technology etc, Kipchoge still had to go and run 42km at over 21kph.

There is nothing artificial about running. Black man did it and now you credit white man's shoes.

Grab a pair we meet next Saturday.

Ever since the cinder track there have been 'special running conditions' .

N

President Trump could beat this guy

I absolutely agree with you😀🧡

Stop this nonsense.

These shoes have so much in common with the regular shoe you can by in a shop like a Mercedes and the formula1 Mercedes...

I lack words

So, Nike has made you believe that IT'S the shoe that ran and not Kipchoge. SMH..

Eliud Kipchoge Has Thrust Himself Into The Pantheon Of All-Time Greats - But His Sub-Two-Hour Marathon Is Tainted By AssociationEliud Kipchoge broke one of the biggest sporting barriers in history on Saturday morning. But financial support from Ineos and Nike raises uncomfortable questions. This is a disgraceful article. It draws away from the greatness of his achievement & throws all light on the negatives of the people who dont really matter. Maybe the choice of title is what is misplaced. Why do writers constantly look for a negative in anything positive that happens? Go run a bath and shut up.
