An eerie, elusive giant squid was caught on video for the 1st time in the U.S.

" captured a giant squid in its natural habitat in the Gulf of Mexico on June 19. It's just the second time the reclusive Remarkably, humanity went all the way until

, one of the researchers on the expedition."To know that I was witnessing something that had only been seen once before in nature filled me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and respect for what still is to be discovered." To attract the squid, the team used a camera system called Medusa that sports a ring of LED lights meant to imitate the type of bioluminescent jellyfish that squid prey upon. The system is lowered deep into the water via a mile-long cable to record hours of footage. It is then raised back up to a ship where the video is downloaded and reviewed. The squid spotting came near the end of the expedition, after Medusa had already been deployed five times and gathered 120 hours of footage.

Michael Vecchione at the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services - National Systematics Laboratory at the Smithsonian would later confirm that he also thought the video showed a giant squid.
