Fans might have to wait a while longer for the next Mortal Kombat or Injustice game, according to a recent tweet from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon. Ever since the acclaimed fighting game studio announced that it would be winding down support for 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11 last July, fans have been heavily speculating on what NetherRealm will be working on next.
However, there is one other possible NetherRealm project that fans have been speculating about for the last year and a half: a Marvel fighting game in the style of Injustice. While such a title would seem unlikely given that Marvel has traditionally partnered with Capcom for fighting games, there have been plenty of rumors and leaked roster ideas for this hypothetical NetherRealm Marvel game. Some fans have even gone as far as to suggest that NetherRealm should create a Marvel vs.
— Ed Boon May 17, 2022 This isn’t the first time that Ed Boon’s social media posts have sparked discussion over what NetherRealm could be working on next, as the Mortal Kombat co-creator often engages with fans and shares mysterious hints at upcoming projects and guest Mortal Kombat characters. This often includes teasing a possible NetherRelam-developed Marvel title, as Boon once stated that a battle between Spider-Man and Batman is one of his all-time dream match-ups.
Of course, none of this necessarily means that NetherRealm is working on a Marvel title instead of Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3, and Boon's latest mention of the multiverse could have simply been a joke about how his studio can only make one fighting game at a time. In any case, it seems that fighting game fans will have to wait to find out what NetherRealm is really working on next.
A graduate from York County School of Technology, he's self-published several books on Amazon, and once won 1st place at a regional computer fair for a CGI animated short. He might post it on Youtube someday. He hopes that working for this site will be his first step into the larger universe of online writing, since Megazord technology hasn’t been invented yet and he doesn't seem to have any Force powers. You can check out his work at The Uncanny Fox, purchase his books on Amazon.
How do I wish that NR is working on a Marvel fighting game. Capcom screwed up the franchise, NR would make it better then it ever was.
