WWE's streaming home, Peacock, censored Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson's iconic"Rock Concert" promo. While professional wrestling had already been a television staple for decades, WWE's Monday Night Raw first aired in 1993 on USA. Despite occasionally encountering periods of low viewership and switching networks multiple times, WWE Raw has been an extraordinarily long-lasting program.
The WWE was the launching point of many stars, including Dwayne Johnson. After a college career in football, Johnson followed in his father's footsteps and became a professional wrestler under several ring names, but his most famous was a heel called The Rock. After his wrestling career made him a superstar, Johnson continued working as an actor. His latest film, Red Notice, was released on Netflix in November 2021 and starred The Rock alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot.
Peacock has censored other WWE segments on its site. When the WWE Network moved to its streaming service, NBCUniversal announced that it would make sure the network aligned with its standards and practices. While other segments cut included content that was obviously insensitive or offensive, like Vince McMahon saying the n-word in 2005, it isn't obvious why the"Rock Concert" was cut. Full versions of the promo are still available elsewhere online.
NBCUniversal's decision to censor content on Peacock can be seen as of a piece with other streaming services as well. Even Disney added disclaimers to some of its classic films available on Disney+. As television and movies move online, competition between the sites providing streaming services is tight, and none of them can afford to lose customers by ignoring unacceptable behavior.
