,” an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic, opened to $40.1 million at the North American box office. It’s a respectable start given the ongoing pandemic and the film’s unconventional debut. In addition to playing in 4,125 domestic theaters, “Dune” premiered simultaneously on HBO Max, which might have taken a chunk out of overall ticket sales.
In a milestone for the studio, “Dune” landed the biggest three-day tally for Warner Bros. since the company began its day-and-date strategy on HBO Max. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which scored a then-pandemic record $31 million in April, previously held that high-water mark.
“I’m smiling,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein said on Sunday morning. “Exhibitors are thrilled. The best part is, fans are loving what they’re seeing. They’re loving the big-screen experience. It’s been a winner of a weekend for movie-lovers.”, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac and Josh Brolin, “Dune” is the first chapter in an expected two-part saga.
Avid fans of Herbert’s seminal 1965 novel sought out “Dune” on the biggest screen possible, with premium formats such as Imax, Dolby and 4DX accounting for 50% of domestic ticket sales. Imax alone contributed $9 million, representing 22.5% of the market share, marking the company’s largest opening weekend since the pandemic.
It's already sitting at 220 million and it's Denis' best opening at the box office. Of course we're getting a sequel.
Damn well better be!
I mean there are like 3 books, and movie covered like half of the first one. So...
Please. Please. Please.
Part 2 better be so fucking good
The best Sci Fi of its generation
cool movie but def a lil false advertisement with zendaya and mamoa
TheBuie Would have been more if not for covid. We watched it at home on HBO Max. No pandemic we would’ve seen it in the theater.
Well if google is to be believed, it’s currently at around $220million, it’s budget was 165million, so I’d definitely say it’s successful enough for part2 to be made!
I prefer the David Lynch version.
We need dune sequels please make all of them
If we don’t get 11 sequels we are all striking lol
Another 2 hours 45 mins of a goth kid sleeping, walking in sand and looking at his hand in a rock pool. No thanks.
We'll take it.
40m despite the fact that's it's free on HBO? Are you kidding me? People are literally renting theatres for private showing... This would've made a 100m+ opening before the pandemic...
Please yes
I just appreciate the fact that despite all the challenges of this pandemic and making a film in this environment, we still get to watch something decent to take our mind off things even for just a couple of hours. Congratulations to everyone who made this and thank you very much
“dune part 1” important to note
40M is great considering we’re still in the grips of a pandemic. Many folks will think twice before crowding in a cinema for hours (even vaccinated and masked).
Not a sequel but Part 2. They still need to film the second half of the first book.
YES PLEASE!!
how?, this movie sucks
For sure strongest out of the same day hbo max releases and comes out this strong during venom, James Bond and Halloween. It’s will for sure get a sequel
Why are we comparing opening numbers when it simultaneously started airing on the HBO app for free
ITS COMING
I would easily say yes 💯. Not many debuts had a $40M opening weekend. Some did more, yes, but not a whole lot. Plus it’s HBOMax numbers im sure are great; plus with the internet rave about it and how much everyone seems to love it ….. I would say, yes!
Watched on HBO. Really enjoyed. I could have had another 2-3 hours actually of the first part.
If not, the second half of the movie was a total waste. That part of the story is only compelling given what comes next.
Didn’t you already report this week that Dune is guaranteed a sequel regardless of box office numbers ?
It's been one weekend. Chill out.
Amazing graphics & cinematography, acting was all on point but the script was lacking & the film sadly never got going, nor had any really meaning 👎
It’s poor 🤦🏽
The money that went into this pointless feature film remake would have been better spent (and Frank Herbert's populous array of characters better served) by a cable/streaming platform series.
In her interview with Deadline she basically said if you watched the ending of the movie you know the answer to whether there would be a sequel or not. Aka yes they are making one.
I really hope so!
🤷🏾♀️..... I thought it was boring. SorryNotSorry
Please Part 2,
WB said if it does well on HBOMax there will be a sequel
I think every person who saw it in theaters is commenting on it here.
'Dune' producers should be saying, 'Thank you, Stephen Colbert.' He genuinely has loved the book since his youth and has raved about this adaptation.
The entire movie seemed to be a trailer for the sequel.
Problem is box office doesn’t mean what it did 3 years ago. $40M opening now might be fine. I just watched it on HBOMAX last night… box office won’t be deciding factor anymore. Part of their subscription fees and their streaming lineup- will sequel draw more subscribers? Maybe
Yes. It would have been more had it been pre-pandemic.
If they film a second part, it better have a stronger script or there definitely won't be a third.
The whole movie is just setting up the sequel
Nah...
Announce it wbpictures Dune DuneMovie DunePart2
