Desalination technology can cost anywhere between two to 10 times the cost of traditional freshwater sources, says Meagan Mauter, research director for the National Alliance for Water Innovation and an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University. “The National Alliance for Water Innovation is really built on the premise that to drop costs and to reduce energy intensity, we need to look at the broader network of water management in order to drop those costs,” Mauter says. “So broadly, the costs of managing water are the combination of the costs of treating water, plus the costs of distributing water and collecting wastewater.”
Climate change is not only expected to affect the amount of available water, but it will also impact “the timing at which that water is delivered or naturally stored,” Mauter says. Making the electricity system more energy efficient is also “deeply connected” to the water supply.
hereandnow I drink it everyday. UAE I would imagine the initial investment is large yet worthwhile for the world to have drinkable water especially in Africa and other countries. Technology exists
hereandnow Think this my 6 or 7th 'sky is falling ' climate crisis in 40 years. So far Earth has 'ended' about a 1/2 dozen times. Yet I'm still alive. CA and FL are still here. Islands w/ population still exist. It's almost like it is just hysteria
hereandnow Good article! Let’s hope we can reach a more cost effective method in the near future! Until then, let’s do what we can
hereandnow Only if you hate nuclear energy. Otherwise is fine.
hereandnow they are doing wrong. Filtration is a bottle neck when they should be distilling it.
hereandnow Doom porn is driven by modal verbs and Grant applications.
hereandnow Waterworld
hereandnow In Michigan the Great Lakes are filled to the brim
hereandnow so what? you either change the environment on purpose to meet the demand or you move people to places that can supply the necessities. I hope it won't take 50 years for these scientists to figure this out.
hereandnow Thoughts and prayers!
hereandnow I've said for so long that 'the water wars are coming!' If I was to say it again, I think my wife would leave me!
hereandnow I can't wait for a salty Rio Grande
hereandnow Malthus.
hereandnow Lake Michigan is at it highest levels........all good in Midwest. California needs to capture rain and snow run off instead of dumping into Pacifi6for starters as well build more desalination plants. Unfortunately their local Gov't is inept.
Thank goodness I'll be dead by 2071.
hereandnow Build more reservoirs and desalination plants. You’re welcome.
hereandnow Well shit...
hereandnow Matthew 6:31,34 NKJV 'Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' [34] Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
hereandnow Oh yeah but we should totally elect mayor Pete or whatever
hereandnow CoyoteGulch
hereandnow That far out is actually longer than I would have said.
hereandnow Vote Blue No Matter Who VBNMW
hereandnow Lucky we'll all already be dead.
hereandnow And the water that remains elsewhere will be compromised There is much trouble ahead concerning our freshwater sources
hereandnow Let's come up with solutions not predictions.
