As a society, our impulse is to run full-tilt away from loneliness, and while there’s no reason that being single should mean being lonely, there is sometimes an overlap. Fresh from a painful break-up, Olivia Laing devoted herself to exploring loneliness after she moved to Manhattan in her mid-30s.
“There were things that burned away at me, not only as a private individual, but also as a citizen of our century, our pixelated age,” she writes in the introduction. “What does it mean to be lonely? How do we live, if not intimately engaged with another human being?” Part memoir, part study of artists ranging from Edward Hopper to Nan Goldin,is the result of her attempts to answer those questions. This is no beach read, but it will change the way you perceive solitude forever.
