Doyel: Who you got for Colts' backup QB, Nick Foles or Sam Ehlinger?

You’re probably too intelligent to wonder about the Indianapolis Colts’ backup quarterback after just one preseason game, but not everyone is as smart as you are. I mean, you knew that. But know this:

Granted, you also saw Ehlinger spark a supporting cast of future bankers and welders and gym teachers, getting more done than Foles with a lot less. Ehlinger led two TD drives. Foles led one, but his lost fumble resulted in seven points on the same play, leaving his plus-minus at zero. You probably did that math – brilliant, I’m calling you – but it’s way, way too early to evenBecause you’re too smart for that.

Reich’s just staring at me. It’s unsettling, and he’s still staring, and I’m starting to feel bad. But he keeps staring, and now I’m getting ticked off. Ehlinger was playing mostly with guys whose names I can’t spell. In my defense, I’ve not heard of most of them. Jelani Woods? Now, there’s a name I know. He’s the rookie tight end from Virginia, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s the guy Ehlinger found for an 11-yard TD after eluding Buffalo’s pass rush by stepping into the pocket to avoid one threat, sliding right to avoid another, then throwing an absolute pellet to Woods.

There is a reason the Colts have kept Ehlinger on the team. He is good. Continues to make progress. Got injured one season after great start, three seasons ago, I think. He is fun to watch.
