Defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton came to Illinois as a modest three-star recruit, ranked the No. 1,024 player in the class of 2020. After two years in school, both in Walters’ scheme, he was one of 20 semifinalists for the 2022 Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the top defensive player in the country. Maybe you don’t care what Kevin Kane – who’s he? – has to say about Purdue’s new coach. Maybe you’d be more interested in hearing from Purdue’s athletics director.
