Playing on the boys basketball team in Summitville toughened Lisa Wilken for the road to come. A story about tragedy, perseverance and basketball.

Check out the other sports teams on pages 34 and 35 of the 1982-83 yearbook for Summitville Elementary in Madison County. They’re smiling on the track team. The tough guys on the wrestling team are grinning too. And the cross-country team? Someone must’ve told a joke just before the flash, they’re smiling so big.

Her sisters did, anyway. Sisters can get away with that, especially when they’re right; Lisa Wright did have bird legs! She got her height early, as girls tend to do, towering above most of the boys at Summitville Elementary. She was 5-foot-8 in sixth grade, and her favorite player was Larry Bird. You understand the nickname.

Legendary IndyStar sports columnist Bob Collins did his best to be enlightened. Not sure what else I can say about his coverage of the first girls state tournament, which had well-intentioned but ridiculous lines like: “I have no doubt that in the audience of over 7,000 at Hinkle Fieldhouse there were some male chauvinist types who came to smirk and stayed to enjoy.”

A year later she recruited friends Cristi Hughes and Leslie Little to join her at tryouts, and they ambushed those poor boys. Wright was the second-tallest kid on the team, with the determination that comes from being the youngest of four kids – their parents were factory workers – and the physical maturity that often comes to girls before boys. Hughes was just a ball of fire, quick feet under those blonde ponytails, getting to the rim whenever she wanted. They started at center and point guard.

“I think about half were all right with it,” he says of having girls on the boys team, “and half weren’t.”

See how she's using TikTok to confront the pro-life protesters surrounding the clinic. Abortion is healthcare. Forced birth is a crime against humanity.
