“I really wanted to know what happened, who was responsible, and ultimately to make a film where we could learn some lessons from that to ensure that this kid of tragedy doesn’t happen again,” director Rory Kennedy says of the motivation behindDebuting at the virtual Sundance Film Festival today and on Netflix on February 18, the Mark Bailey & Keven McAlester written documentary probes fatal failures and corporate cost cutting at Boeing that led to two of the company’s 737 MAX planes...

As you can see in the video above Oscar-nominated Kennedy and Bailey joined us today in Deadline’s Sundance Studio. In addition to the filmmakers themselves, Michael Stumo, who lost his daughter Samya in the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash spoke to us too. As did Chair of House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Rep. Peter DeFazio and Cap. Dan Carey, former president Allied Pilots Association and American Airlines pilot.

While the crashes saw the 737 Max grounded for a few months, the Federal Aviation Administration in 2021 gave the green light to the planes flying again. Seeking to wrap up a criminal charge that Boeing scammed the FAA, the company agreed to a $2.5 settlement just over a year ago to get the DOJ off their backs.

Protesting what he calls a “sweetheart deal,” Stumo is now seeking a sit down with current Attorney General Merrick Garland and hopes to see the case reopened.is produced by Kennedy, Bailey, and McAlester, along with Amanda Rohlke, Sara Bernstein, and Justin Wilkes. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard serve as executive producers on the film.
