“We’re big people.” A Chicago family built a new home with double-height ceilings, ample outdoor space and an open first floor to accommodate their tall family.

After a decade of living in a 4,000-square-foot single-family west of the city’s Belmont Harbor on Lake Michigan, they relocated farther north, where they bought a century-old house on a rare double lot for $1.26 million. They tore down the existing structure and in its place built a 5,900-square-foot, concrete-and-cedar house. The new home is blessed with double-height ceilings, three full levels and ample outdoor areas. The cost: $2.13 million.

They initiated the move in 2014, then opted for a monthslong demolition process of the existing house, at a cost of $80,000. Working with Studio Dwell, a Chicago architecture office with a large residential practice, they chose a design that would emphasize natural light and an open-plan first floor, and make the most of their double lot.

The five-bedroom home, with four full bathrooms and two half-baths, was finished in 2018, just in time for son Nicholas to overtake his father in the height department. “We’re big people,” says Mr. Harriott, the 53-year-old CEO of a high-tech manufacturing company. “I’m 6-foot-6 and my wife is 5-foot-10. And we now have a 17-year-old who is 6-foot-7.” The couple’s other son, Lucas, is 15 and 6-foot-2-inches.

Couldn’t believe that house was built where it was. The sidewalk on Berteau is within feet of the all glass exterior wall and passerby’s can see directly into the living room and basement.
