It’s been 51 years since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. And while a single shot fired on April 4, 1968, was the cause of death, the leader’s 39 years of life were plagued by violent anti-blackness and hatred from others based on his race and prominence as a civil rights leader. King’s rapid ascent into the national limelight as a young preacher made him a target of both citizen vigilantes and state-based mercenaries and surveillance.
When he received this letter in the mail, King deduced that it was from members of the FBI, under the leadership of then director J. Edgar Hoover, and he interpreted the threatening language as an attempt to intimidate and undermine him. Not only did the letter target King and his legacy, it was part of a larger state-based effort to quell the growing civil rights movement.
