Don't Look Up director Adam McKay says the film's inclusion of a real phone sex hotline was entirely accidental. The science-fiction satire about two astronomers who discover a large comet on a collision course with Earth released on Netflix on December 24 after enjoying a limited theatrical release.
While the movie takes satirical jabs at a wide range of targets as it allegorically explores society's response to the threat of climate change, fans picked up on a surprising Easter egg that left them wondering whether it was intentional. In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio's Dr. Randall Mindy takes part in a PSA video about the coming comet threat, which includes an official hotline people can call to ask questions and alleviate their stress.
We were going to set up a line for that. But we didn't think of doing it until the end and we didn't have enough time to get our own phone number so that's just a random phone number. We in no way planned it being a sex hotline. Pure accident. Unless someone at Netflix or our graphics house picked it and I didn't know about it, I have no idea. In fact, no way. They wouldn't have done that on purpose.
While viewers of most films might've assumed this was an accident, its hilarious timing in Don't Look Up made it plausible that the phone sex hotline was placed there intentionally. In the ad, Dr. Mindy tells the public to call the number and receive"peace of mind," making its real-life counterpart particularly cutting. Indeed, fans of the joke might be a little disappointed to discover it was just an accident.
Outside of this one, small element, discussion about Don't Look Up rages on, and will likely continue throughout the next couple of months. While frequently eliciting mixed reactions from critics, McKay's recent string of socially conscious satires have landed well with awards bodies, and this cast's recent nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards is a strong indication his latest film will be in contention at this year's Oscars.
Really? That’s why productions used 555 numbers before, and designated non active numbers now
Lol. “Strange coincidence.” Just call it before you put it in your movie. It’s called “due diligence.” SMH
