A newly-released synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirms that the film will feature alternate realities. The film is directed by Sam Raimi and is the follow-up to 2016’s Doctor Strange. It is currently scheduled to debut in theaters on May 6, 2022.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see Benedict Cumberbatch once again take center stage as Dr. Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following supporting roles in several recent films. In the sequel, he teams up with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and America Chavez on a journey through the multiverse, seemingly to fix the damage done by Strange himself.
In Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.
So, while the title and first Doctor Strange 2 trailer already offered hints at a journey through the multiverse, this synopsis confirms that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the titular Marvel hero journey through alternate realities on his new mission.
However, despite all of the weird cosmic insanity that Strange will likely encounter as he journeys through alternate realities, it seems that the stakes of the film may remain quite personal. Specifically, the trailers seem to be teeing up a showdown between Doctor Strange and a variant of himself from another reality.
