President Mahmoud Abbas said on Friday that parliamentary and presidential elections would be held later this year in a bid to heal long-standing divisions. His main rival, the militant Islamist group Hamas, welcomed the move.
If Hamas won, 76% thought Fatah - the party led by Abbas - would not accept the result and 58% believed Hamas would reject a Fatah victory. It is unclear what mechanism would be put in place to ensure a free election, whether international observers would take part and whether Abbas, aged 85 and in poor health, would run.
The United Nations also stood ready to support efforts for Palestinians to be able to exercise their democratic rights, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman said, adding that it would “be a crucial step towards Palestinian unity.”Israeli officials did not immediately comment and it was unclear whether Israel would permit election activity to take place in East Jerusalem, as it did previously. Palestinians want to hold the elections there, as well as the West Bank and Gaza.

National election is a good thing; but, whether that would bring any benefit to the Palestinians is another story. The United States granted independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946. Today, Philippines per capita GDP is 1/20th that of the U.S. From independence to poverty.
Well if they are going to use the same election voting machines as we did in USA I can tell you it will be another decade of misery for the Palestinians when Hamas steals the election from its people.
