Did law enforcement act fast enough in Uvalde? | Opinion

Border Patrol agents walk around a memorial before a Texas Department of Public Safety press conference providing updates about the Tuesday shooting that left 19 children and two adults dead at Robb Elementary School on Thursday, May 26, 2022, in front of the school in Uvalde, TX.

A DPS official said Thursday that law enforcement officers were in the building not long after the gunman locked himself in a classroom. Those officers took fire from the gunman, backed off and waited for nearly an hour for a tactical assault team to arrive. During that time, anguished parents shouted to law enforcement officers outside the school to enter the building immediately. Some parents had to be kept from charging into the building in search of their children.

The story keeps changing. Lt. Christopher Olivarez with DPS previously told CNN that a school security officer outside was armed, and had exchanged gunfire with Ramos. Later Olivarez said law enforcement wasn’t sure about that account. At Thursday’s news conference, another DPS official said there was no school resources officer at the school and that the shooter entered the school unimpeded through an unlocked door.

NRA Opens Gun Convention in Texas Days After Uvalde School MassacreThe National Rifle Association begins its annual convention in Houston on Friday, and leaders of the powerful gun-rights lobbying group are gearing up to “reflect on” — and deflect any blame for — the deadly shooting earlier this week in Uvalde, Texas. What blame should they hold? Like the guilt you feel because you know every day your kids aren’t safe because we don’t have proper security measures in place? Sounds like a government problem to me. 😐

'I am going to shoot an elementary school', Uvalde suspect posted on Facebook before shootingNEW - The Uvalde shooting suspect posted on Facebook 30 minutes before the massacre, according to Governor Abbott. The Facebook posts were the only forewarning of the tragedy, according to Abbott, who added the gunman had no history of mental illness. But according to the Star Tribune… he did have mental illness. In fact the governor was told about this too. This is inaccurate. They were private messages not posts.
