Kohl's reinvented itself to adapt to sweeping changes in the retail industry. But the company still can't dodge intense pressures on department stores from online rivals, big box retailers and discount chains.

Sales at Kohl's stores open at least a year dropped 3.4% during the first quarter of 2019 — the company's first drop in almost two years — it reported Tuesday. Kohl's also trimmed its guidance, and now expects sales this year to break even or decline. Stores live in fear of Amazon. The Kohl's CEO embraced itThe results surprised investors who bought into Kohl's approach in recent years.

Macy's sales inched up 0.7% last quarter, but it was led by growth in its discount Backstage stores.Walmart and Target have both said recently that they are gaining market share in their home and clothing divisions. I just find that so sad as I still like going in to stores to browse and shop

The problem with these retail store like Sears etc...is the lack of vision. Run by dinosaurs stubborn in their ways. My example above would have had me driving 30 min to the store and purchasing other products along with my p/u. I feel for the employees for job losses.

Not surprised! Over a year ago called Kohls customer service and asked why I can't get a product sent online for instore p/u. No interest in my call. Said to them get with times or suffer like other retailers. Never looked at their website since.

Robots gonna take over humans real soon! Yet, I see people still participating in “self-checkouts!” People don’t have principles. I’ve never used SC myself. Business loose out from that “impulsive buyer” since online shoppers are specific in their needs.

There is nothing preventing a balance of both by brick and mortar stores. Take Amazon for examplethey own and operate brick and mortar stores, ie: Whole Foods.

T'was bound to happen. When the shopping experience becomes a hassle, a vacuum is created, & like nature, shopping abhors a vacuum. Additionally, retailer attempted to defy the 1st law of economics, it's working class that keep your doors open. Yet they're contemptuously treated.

Amazon paid 0 in tax dollars last year, just saying.

I am sorry and sad that the fun experience of shopping is becoming the bare essential 'purchasing' of items online. Pretty soon, humans won't socialize at all if the won't associate directly with a cashier, another shopper, a ....

Irregular growth of chain stores has left the customer in jeopardy for retailers

And, if the relatively strong US economy, at least numbers-wise, is closing down retail, what does that say for we retail in other countries?

People watching is stale.

The price of technology. Will only get worse as technology gets better.

May be economical to some businesses, but in addition to actually purchasing something, don't forget about the other two purposes of shopping - enjoyment of physical experience & joy of shopping, and the social aspect of it.
