Even in a normal moviegoing environment, an R-rated anime action fantasy doing battle with the big Hollywood franchise release for the top spot would be a big deal. But in this current Covid-era, with every major movie being judged on a kind of “the fate of theatrical moviegoing is at stake” level, it’s a double-sized miracle this weekend. Yes,earned a best-case-scenario $9.5 million, topping this weekend’s official would-be biggie.

’ R-rated adaptation of the long-running video game series opened a week later than intended, both to givemore breathing room and in hopes that Canada and other suffering overseas markets might improve. Did opening against, another “totally for kids except for all the blood” R-rated action fantasy hurt Simon McQuoid’s video game flick? Maybe, but a $9.03 million opening day in 3,073 theaters is still pretty damn good. We’re likely looking at a $24.
