Donald Trump still has a 14-point lead in rural places, but that is well short of his 22-point advantage four years ago

chuckle while hammering metal posts beside a road in Cresco, a sleepy town in northern Iowa. These will support the 70th Trump-Pence door-sized “barn sign” they have put up in Howard County in past weeks. Already they have erected ten times more signs and flags than four years ago, says Neil Shaffer, Republican county chairman, as he twists a plastic tag. He was tickled recently by one that derided the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden. Its slogan was “Vote No on Creepy Joe”.

A short drive away, in a house in Riceville, a dozen face-masked Democratic activists swap strikingly similar tales. Laura Hubka, the Democratic county chair, has been in the area for 25 years. Never before was it this “nerve-racking, horrible”, she says, even when somebody shot at her own dog. A passing driver recently screamed that she was a “fucking idiot” as she distributed Biden signs. Those, too, have been stolen and defaced.

Whatever happened to midwestern nice? Many locals blame nastiness online for infecting once cordial real-world relations. Democrats finger Mr Trump’s divisive style. A shop owner says “Trump-or-die” supporters post vile and anti-science messages online, or race about in noisy pickup trucks while blaring support for the president. Karry, a Trump supporter sipping coffee in Sue-’s diner in Cresco, says “Division is fuelled by the left; it’s always about ‘racism’.

On my drive through Rural Ohio, I counted the signs and flags and it was easily Biden by 7:1 ratio. I was stunned.

Who would have thought a NYC billionaire that is so prideful would have ever appealed to the salt of the earth

Really? Surprising to me. I live in a rural area and have yet to see a single Biden sign or flag. Not a Trump supporter by any means. Just a small sample size to pull from.

Hahahahahahhahaha You might want to take a ride into Rual America

Everyone heard TRUMP tell his 'Proud Boys' to 'stand back and stand by.' We all heard it, Trump SHOWED HIS 'TRUE COLORS'

The Democrats can take heart? The president tried to start a civil war.

This is false. Enthusiasm for Trump is off the charts in rural America. Trump flags everywhere. Funny, no biden signs anywhere.

The debate didn't spend enough time on Trump's nefarious relationship with Russia. Please take quick POLL: Has Putin and FSB spy agency compromised President Trump?

Amid a pandemic, that might actually matter. Especially if said rural voters are unenthused about traveling some distance to vote in person, while buying his claptrap about mail voting.

This election will be one of the dirtiest elections ever

Hit hard by China sanctions.

Is getting headlines written by Trump?

Less badly?

BEAKING NEWS! : 14 is less than 22 ! Scientist are baffled at this discovery!

The Economist should start calling themselves as The Socialist. I stopped buying this magazine a long time ago because of these biased articles.

Honestly who are these people in rural areas

IT'S TIME WE ALL COME TO THE REALIZATION that Trump's only interest is his re-election & that Trump couldn't care less about anything or anyone else. 'TRUMP WILL SAY & DO ANYTHING' he thinks will secure his re-election, even endangering other people's lives. Trump's no leader.

*N. Korean leader Kim Jong-un, suspected in the poisoned death of his half-brother. *Russian leader Vladimir Putin suspected in poisoning at least two of his political opponents, one died. So, why does Trump say he likes them both? Does Trump view himself as a 'killer,' too?

The U.S. is only 4.2% of the world's population but, we account for over 20% of the world's COVID-19 deaths. Two hundred thousand deaths and counting and still Trump couldn't care less! All that Trump can offer are defeatist excuses & nothing more. Trump is an abject failure!

Dummies who pay more tax than he does.

TRUMP KNEW early on how dangerous the coronavirus pandemic would be and yet Trump still played it down, HE LIED! Now, with over 2000,000 deaths, it's undeniable 'TRUMP HAS BLOOD ON HIS HANDS!'

Also Trump recognizes that Trade policies in the past from previous Presidents moved manufacturing and jobs overseas and now Biden is copying this policy of Trump and he too suggest expansion of manufacturing here.

Trump prioritizes Americans by creating more jobs, removing illegals, making it hard for companies to hire foreign workers, should hire Americans instead, low taxes unlike Biden raise taxes and recognizing that Obamacare does not benefit all.

About half of white Republicans in 3 Southern states say discrimination against whites needs more attention: pollAmong white likely voters in Georgia, 77 percent of Republicans say 'too much attention' is given to discrimination against Black people. Trump is about to experience the pain & humiliation from a mighty kick in the rear by our 200yr old democracy: packing & leaving the WH, as much as he wants to cling on to power as insurance against all his crimes, real & perceived, only voters decide who lives in the WH. Oh for the love of God. Who was it again that said “when you’re privileged, equality feels like oppression”? Whites need to move to Canada if the oppression is so bad.
