The Democratic National Committee announced today its plans for the next series of early-state primary debates, beginning in January

Buttigieg, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders participate in the fifth Democratic primary debate of the 2020 presidential campaign season co-hosted by MSNBC and The Washington Post at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on November 20, 2019. The Democratic National Committee on Thursday announced its plans for the next series of early-state primary debates, beginning in January.

The DNC has partnered with broadcast networks ABC, NBC and CBS and cable news networks CNN and MSNBC , with the first debate set for January 14 in Des Moines, Iowa hosted by CNN andDebates will follow on February 7 at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire; February 19 in Charleston, South Carolina.

The scheduling of the debates, particularly the January 14 debate, could create conflict if an impeachment trial of President Trump is underway in the Senate, both in terms of drawing attention away from the debate—and candidates, as several of the Democrats in the race would be forced to sit as jurors. A DNC official told CNN “if a conflict with an impeachment trial is unavoidable, the DNC will evaluate its options and work with all the candidates to accommodate them.

The DNC says qualification criteria, format, and moderators for the debates will be announced at a future date.
