Tonight's debate is set to start at 9 p.m. ET. We'll start our pre-debate coverage shortly after 8 p.m.Journalists watching the September Democratic presidential debate in Houston.I’m Ken Thomas, a national political reporter at the Wall Street Journal, and I'll be hosting tonight's live analysis of the fifth debate.

Debate watchers will be looking for any signs that the two leading liberals are beginning to diverge on one of the leading policy issues in the Democratic primaries.The 37-year-old mayor has surged in Iowa in recent weeks and a poll taken last week showed him leading the field in the nation’s first caucus state. Mr. Buttigieg’s rise has injected turbulence into the top of the Democratic field even as national polls have shown Mr. Biden holding an advantage over Ms. Warren and Mr. Sanders.
