Delta Airlines plans to cut its 717 operating fleet from 91 aircraft to 30-45 over the next 2 years

The 717 has some key differences to the MD-88 and MD-90 that will be retired by June.

The 717 is relatively younger at 18 years on average compared to the MD-90’s 23 years and MD-88’s 29 years. The 717 is smaller, a potential advantage as recovery is unclear. The MD-88 and MD-90 have 149 and 158 seats respectively, but the 717 has only 110 seats. The 717 is Delta’s smallest mainline jet after the A220’s 109 seats, making the A220 a natural replacement for the 717 in New York.

The 717 has cost disadvantages with a $31/hour operating cost per seat last year, according to AirInsight’s Decision Analytics. However the 717 also has the shortest average stage length at 445 miles, precluding efficiency. The 717’s average maintenance cost at $454/hour is comparable to the A320 and 737’s $454-455/hour. The A220 is only $430/hour, but is a much newer aircraft.

The 717 is unusual in Delta’s fleet since most 717s are leased whereas Delta tends to own most of its aircraft. Of Delta’s 91 717s, 78 are leased .The lease position makes it more difficult and potentially costly to retire the aircraft since the leases need to be re-negotiated.
