Oregon became the first U.S. state to decriminalize all drugs, with voters overwhelmingly supporting a ballot measure intended to reduce arrests and improve access to addiction treatments.

"GMA" takes a look at the legislation that will change things in states across the U.S., from Mississippi approving a new state flag to Oregon decriminalizing possession of hard drugs.Oregon became the first U.S. state to decriminalize all drugs, with voters overwhelmingly supporting a ballot measure on Tuesday intended to reduce arrests and improve access to addiction treatments.

Passing Measure 110 means Oregon residents no longer can be arrested or imprisoned for possessing small amounts of substances such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine or LSD. That doesn't mean the drugs are legal.

Fewer drug arrests should reduce Oregon residents' interaction with the criminal justice and legal systems, and in turn, limit their risk for health problems associated with incarceration, including COVID-19 infection and drug overdose, Beletsky said. In his estimation, reinvesting criminal justice savings in under-resourced health and addiction services would go even further to make the measure successful.

One potential pitfall to guard against is ensuring law enforcement doesn't initiate encounters based on drugs, then arrest individuals for non-drug-related crimes."You need monitoring, training and other measures to minimize such shifts," Beletsky told ABC News.An election worker sorts mail-in ballots at the Multnomah County Duniway-Lovejoy Elections Building, Nov. 2, 2020, in Portland, Ore.

That's especially important given the racial disparities often seen among those arrested for drug possession. Despite similar usage rates, Black Americans are almostMeasure 110 received widespread support from civil rights and physician groups,

This signifies a huge step towards harm reduction within the U.S and that brings a smile to my face. End the war on drugs: give addicts HELP NOT JAIL TIME!

That seems like a good idea....yeah

What if you have small amounts of all of those?

Right? In 2022 34 Counties there will have the option on their ballots to join as the State of Idaho. Looks like 2 counties near Washington doesn't speak for the State after all.

Jeez look at all the bots on this thread.....smh

No more low hanging fruit for police

Now the whole world can be said to be an USA virus

Hopefully all the addicts move to OR ASAP.

junkieville just like sanfrancisco losangeles

Republicans, the fight is not over. We need to take to the streets to protest the fraud of these elections. They want us to accept this silently. But, the hope of justice never dies for those who have faith in God!

Another good reason not to visit Oregon!

Obama White House—The Office of National Drug Control Policy: Claims of Benefits from Drug Legalization Exceed Supporting Science Cato Institute report does not present sufficient evidence to support claims regarding causal effects of Portugal’s drug policy on usage rates.

A state to AVOID and SHUN at all costs! They should change their state's name to PATHETIC!

We are so ass backwards in America. This has been legal in Switzerland for a long time.

Pray that president Trump wins the election. President Trump has done so much for the United States and the United States people. President Trump has done for Christians and for Israel. The Christians an d Jews are pray for presided Trump win the election..

Oregon, the magic mushroom 🍄 state

They should get maximum sentences not a slap on the wrist! Its meth and heroin not weed or lollipops!!! Fuck junkies!!!

Idiots

This is good news. Treatment is better and less expensive than incarceration

Good. It needs to be Nationally

Very great news. People struggling with addiction, needs treatment not imprisonment.

Stupid voters.

Well this only going to go one way..... the WRONG way... que a huge influx of ODs and mass drug taking in public... and the police will hand their hands tied.. public safety will be a thing of the past

Why no reward for information leading to fraudulent voting?

About time! All states should be doing this!

I mean antifa needs them for the riots

Bahaha I’m sure that helps with the addiction problem. Don’t stigmatize the drugs that actually kill you. No wonder the opioid epidemic is rising, it’s because we keep making it easier and less shameful to do drugs. I’m not even talking about weed. Make addictions easier.

Leave it to the west coast..always more progressive

Legalizes all drugs. Tax them. Put the cartels out of business.

为你们点烛🕯️

great idea to decriminalize drugs and defund the police in the middle of pandemic and riots 🙄👎These people have lost their minds and common sense completely

Why are we so far behind the rest of the civilized world in this?

Good move. Next thing should be to make the same controlled substances available to addicts, under prescription by doctors. It would kill most of the illegal market and most of the associated crime.

Decriminalized at state or local level remains federally illegal, punishments for possession may be reduced to a fine or set as the lowest law enforcement priority. Legalization, on the other hand, is when a once-banned substance is no longer illegal

With addiction comes crime to feed that addiction. Will be interesting to see how this works. And who exactly will be paying for their treatment? The free healthcare Biden promised? 😂

Stupid. America is going down the drain.

Darn i never got to visit there

Give them all fentanyl, that is one way to stop the rioting and 'peaceful' protests in Portland.
