The deadly June heatwave that hit the Pacific Northwest would have been 'virtually impossible' without climate change, scientists say.

, with about 1.2°C now baked into the world’s climate system. The scientists said that a heat event of this magnitude is 150 times more likely today than it would have been at the beginning of the industrial revolution — when it would have been a 1-in-150,000 year event. Global warming is not uniform, is more extreme at northern latitudes, and amplifies the extremes of heat events.

The days of extreme heat in the Pacific Northwest, where many residents lack air conditioning, were deadly. In Oregon alone, more than 100 deaths have been blamed on the heat, with authorities now calling it a “.” The World Weather Attribution authors warn that this early count is “almost certainly an underestimate,” adding that the the full death toll likely won’t be known for “several months.

Study: Northwest heat wave impossible without climate changeThe deadly heat wave that roasted the Pacific Northwest and western Canada was virtually impossible without human-caused climate change that added a few extra degrees to the record-smashing temperatures, a new quick scientific analysis found. An international team of 27 scientists calculated that climate change increased chances of the extreme heat occurring by at least 150 times, but likely much more. The study, not yet peer reviewed, said that before the industrial era, the region's late June triple-digit heat was the type that would not have happened in human civilization. So there were no heat waves in the northeast before 1940?

In Case You Had Any Doubts, Scientists Found Climate Change Was Definitely Behind The Deadly Pacific Northwest Heatwave“This is something that nobody saw coming, that nobody thought possible,” one scientist said. And now even more people will need energy-sucking air conditioning, that will only make matters worse. But they'll have to get it. So then we'll need 10%-20% MORE 'green energy' to compensate for that 'new demand'. This is yet another self-enforcing consequence of climate change. Pretty stupid!
