David Harbour calls the Thunderbolts the "losers" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Stranger Things star made his MCU debut in 2021's Black Widow as Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian, a Russian super-solider and father figure to Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova. At the recent D23 Expo, the line-up for the MCU's upcoming Thunderbolts movie was revealed which, in addition to Red Guardian, also includes Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Yelena, John Walker/U.S.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a recent appearance on ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast promoting his new Christmas movie Violent Night, Harbour also took some time to discuss Thunderbolts. When asked how they compare to the Avengers, the Red Guardian actor called the Thunderbolts the "losers" of the MCU and teased what to expect from the new super-team.
We're like losers, which I like. We're the losers. I think it's fun to watch us just mess everything up. It's very funny, there's also a lot of pathos in that. There's a lot of drama in a bunch of people who just keep getting their lives wrong and — because of character flaws — keep messing things up. Nobody gives them the respect that they do to Captain America and Iron Man, very capable people. So there's a lot to draw on there.
Baron Zemo is the founder and leader of the Thunderbolts in the comics, though Daniel Brühl was curiously missing from the cast announcement earlier this year. In addition to Harbour, the Thunderbolts movie cast is confirmed to include Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Harrison Ford taking over as Secretary Thaddeus Ross.
The Thunderbolts are much more morally gray than the Avengers, though it remains to be seen how dark the MCU takes the team. Based on Harbour's comments, it seems like the Thunderbolts movie will focus more on the comedic aspects of the team as they "mess everything up," while not ignoring the tragic aspects inherent in those character faults, which is something James Gunn's The Suicide Squad did very well.
With a good director, this movie can really blast offf
Soooo Guardians?
Can't wait
