But then there is that other side of Fisher, the one he is trying mightily to keep bottled up until later Saturday night. It is not always working that way, though. During a 20-minute discussion about his and his team’s journey to the state finals at Monday’s media session, Fisher almost started to cry three times. It was the same way before Wednesday’s practice at Lucas Oil Stadium as he addressed his team.
“ told me, ‘If you want to be a head coach, you’re going to want to coach for that man for the next couple years,’” Preston said. “My original plan was I was going to coach for him for a couple years and then go find a spot to be a head coach. After meeting him, though, I know I have so much more to learn that I can’t spend enough years here learning from him. He’s the best mentor for me because he shows you that it’s not about him at all.
They interviewed Fisher’s colleagues. They interviewed his secretary. They even visited the local barber shop to ask about him. “He always has a positive spin on something,” said Rudolf, who has coached on his staff for six years. “If there’s a negative event, he finds a way to spin it into something beneficial. When we lost to Martinsville he said, ‘This could be a season-defining moment where we come together.’ When your back is to the wall, he sees the light at the end of the tunnel.”
