Critics are accusing the Philippines government of using the coronavirus lockdown to crack down on dissent | Analysis

In mid-March, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered parts of the country to go into a quarantine that would eventually last up to 80 days, and become one of the world's longest and strictest lockdowns.Protests against job losses and food shortages during that period were met with a strong police response and mass arrests. In April, Duterte publicly said police should"shoot ... dead" anyone who violated virus restrictions. "I will not hesitate.

In total, between March and July, police said that more than 70,000 people were arrested for violating Covid-19-related public health rules, so many that authorities said they had to be lenient because they lacked "suitable jail facilities." Many were let off with a warning for breaking curfew or given a fine but thousands were still formally detained.

Is this Portland? Wait no, the cops here are wearing masks

Twitter and Facebook are doing that exact thing right here in the US.

😂😂😂

Juz like what CCP Chinazi is doing to destroy hk. Dictatorship are the same. Wish the world can unite & kick them out of humanity. 🙏🙏🙏

Sounds like the good ole USA.

Democrats election year plandemic. They’ll kill everybody to regain power.

Democrat socio-political ideology infects the toxic leaders of the Philippines. Suppress freedom and promote chaos to further their political aspirations, at any cost. The desperation of the left continues as the election nears. The political 'house of cards' soon will collapse.

Arm the protesters

I am shocked that a dictatorial regime would use the pandemic for political purposes. And it's awful in the Philippines, too.

Is that Portland? Or, you mean it's not America? WT.....

Duterte & Trump are buddies after all

The gov't went to mecq semi lockdown to address the call of HCW for timeout bcoz of rising nbr of covid cases. It's not because they will crack down dissent. 😂

See, some other govts are using CoViD to abuse their People, like Trump & his 'govt' do. The thing is, the US is allegedly a 'free' & 'developed, civilised' country. I'm glad the Whole World sees this & our remaining allies don't miss a second of realDonaldTrump ABUSES either.

Breaking News: NIH Killed Hydroxychlorquine for Vaccine Profits. Guess what? That's not all they killed.

Sounds like Portland and trump

I'm very angry.
