Cowboys may replace Mike McCarthy with assistant if they exit playoffs early

Mike McCarthy’s top assistants have drawn interest for coaching vacancies across the NFL, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly could make a move to replace his head coach with one of them if Dallas loses Sunday in the wild-card round against the 49ers.

Jones “may consider a coaching change should the team fall short of expectations this season,” CBS Sports’The Cowboys won the NFC East with a 12-5 mark under McCarthy during the regular season, and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn have been mentioned as possibilities for various openings around the league.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 4,449 and a franchise record 37 touchdowns under the 33-year-old Moore’s tutelage this season, after suffering a season-ending foot/ankle injury in 2020. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore could take over for Mike McCarthy should the Cowboys lose in the first round.“If this season doesn’t end the way Jerry thinks it should, don’t be surprised if Kellen Moore is their next head coach much sooner than later,” one source told CBS Sports. “He does not want to lose him.”

A second source told the website, “It’s not like there isn’t precedent for something like this,” mentioning Jones making Jason Garrett the highest-paid assistant coach in the league to prevent him from leaving before promoting him to head coach in 2010., Dolphins, Broncos, Vikings and Bears. Moore already has interviewed for the Jacksonville vacancy.
