There were more deaths than births in Alabama last year, a first since the state started keeping records and officials said it's directly tied to the coronavirus pandemic.“Our state literally shrunk in 2020,” state health officer Dr. Scott Harris said at a Covid briefing. He said it’s the first time in the state’s recorded history that this has happened — saying it’s never “been close” before, not even during World War II or the 1918 flu pandemic.
A nurse works on a Covid-19 patient in the intensive care unit on Dec. 10, 2020, at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.Alabama's seven-day average of new cases peaked Sept. 1 at an average of 5,538 new cases per day. In the last two weeks, 795 people died in the state, the third-highest rate of reported Covid deaths in that time frame among states.February was also the last time the state's seven-day average of reported deaths was more than 70. .
Is it grim? Do we need more people there?
Wait until they Talley new York and other states. I bet it will make a significant dent.
Just lies...
So sad when these deaths were prevented!
COVID has taken many lives. May God forgive us all!
Alyssa_Milano That’s what Alabama wants. Deplete the poor so they can cut Medicaid, SNAP, etc. A red state is a bloody state.
Alyssa_Milano
Too bad it's not shrinking CO's population. Since 2015, it's turned into a smelly, overpriced ghetto with a crime rate that is higher than the national average. 😐
Alyssa_Milano YES
Pastor_AnnaNeal
Alyssa_Milano To show you the mentality here, my brother-in-law's co-worker told him he wouldn't get vaccinated because he didn't know what's in the vaccine and he only had a 2% chance of dying from Covid if he got it anyway. No concern about others whatsoever.
with covid! People have no access to health care anymore, so many deaths are actually preventable with precovid medicine
AmhcMrs Maybe Alabama, and the rest of the United States, should begin prioritizing human life over minimizing the difficulties of business. The elected officials would never but people ought to demand it.
Id wager theres a handful of reasons that reduced the number of births, but covid isn't the big cause of more death than life. Its added in. And there was a trend of reduced population via attrition, but covid will be more likely to impact this reduction for this year.
Isn’t this a population control virus in the first place
Yikes ALCinnamonGirl and deaconcruise
ThomasJankow Good riddance of some real bad rubbish. Hope the Republicans keep self-destructing even more. Would be good for America's Democracy and Sanity.
Now do LA..a state right next with almost equal numbers
Their idol, Trump, said to get vaxxed.
BS Fake news
BS
Yet, their neighbor MS Gov Tate Reeves has a plan to do nothing to stop covid.
Sure
Sad but , if they didn’t watch Fox News BS and got vaccinated they wouldn’t be in this situation.
fox and trump are proud yet?
I do NOT believe the shrinkage is only due to the virus!
It's ok, the Republicans are suffering by about three to one.
It is very sad, because they are just so so uneducated and poor there. I don’t understand the far right preachings against vaccines. When people are obese and unhealthy, Covid is a killer. Unfair to preach anti-vaccines in communities that are at higher risk 🤬
Good
'But it's not going to kill you!' After all of the deaths caused by the virus, do any of you still believe that! If you do, then get your affairs in order now! It may your last chance!
Can I get a big BOO-HOO for all those anti-vaxers & anti-maskers?
Shrink in people or shrink in weight? Alabama is the fattest state in the union.
Dead republicans.. I’m not feeling much sympathy
Probably for the best.
Alabama's population has not halved. This is an exaggerated article. Amen
Yup Covid is real Alabama…………..
I mean, they are paying for their freedom in the free country. I respect that.
And? So?
You’ll find it isn’t the COVID
NBC News’s story and the comments reflect a substantial geographic bias against Alabama. California has higher number of cases, and deaths per capita. COVID NBCNews’s Left-leaning fans are loaded with false superiority. Alabama infections are mid-range. MediaAdvocacy
Haitianmigrants should have been sent to Alabama it would have been safer than going back to Haiti and it would have inceased the population thank god unlike Texas who put a ban on AbortionRights
They have been warned over and over about herd immunity. They're just doing it wrong. They're doing it backwards.
More inciting panic and fearmongering by the media.
Well, it is Alabama. I wonder what are the stats for Florida and Texas?
Send them Afghans and Haitians.
Republicans ELIMINATING THEIR OWN VOTERS!! NOT VERY SMART PEOPLE!!
So the state will swing democratic because of default, dem got the vax and rep were too stubborn to listen
Yesterday over 2500 mostly unvaccinated Americans died from covid. A virus that has an effective vaccine.
Sooo hasnt that happened world wide now? Am I missing smthg? Hvnt all pops shrunk? What’s special about Arizona?
The rate is the same ( roughly ) as it is every year. Research please.
Hey Gates, buddy you happy now? 😉
smh
Owning the libs one stupid Covid death at a time. But fewer Q voters benefits the country.
Can we have a census redo?
Owning the Libs all the way to the grave.
The irony Alabama will require an influx of immigrants to sustain itself!
And yet, GQP will continue to push anti-vax BS 🤷🏻♂️
ProtectFreedom Gee I wonder why?
Who would ever complain about there being less Alabamans?
Ok so covid vaccine lasts six months boosters got rejected, so vaccinated bout to become unvaccinated
1 year of record keeping does not count.
That's the point of covid 1 of the plans they want. Reduce population
But they’re “pro-life.”
Lets all try to be a little more like Alabama.
Good. Less MAGATS and science deniers
that's not what mortuaries across the US are saying
Self inflicted auto cull. sad
