As most studies and meta-analyses only provide summaries of patient data—a measure designed to protect the privacy of participants—weak, questionable or even fraudulent studies have received widespread attention to later “collapse” under “basic numerical scrutiny.” The attention on antiparasitic drug ivermectin has seen “hundreds of thousands” of patients treated with the drug, based on unreliable information that has “evaporated under close scrutiny,” the authors noted as an example.
Some of the key trials cited in support of ivermectin against Covid-19 contained evidence of data manipulation, “impossible numbers” and “substantial methodological weaknesses,” the authors said, adding that they “expect further studies supporting ivermectin to be withdrawn over the coming months.” Most, if not all, of the research flaws would have been “immediately detected” if analyses were performed on individual patient data instead of summaries, the researchers said, calling for all Covid-19 trials to publish this data or risk being viewed with suspicion and possibly be excluded from meta-analyses.
