So far, 29 people who got a Covid-19 vaccine in the U.S have developed severe allergic reactions, the CDC says. The agency says the events are rare and encourages getting the shots.

At least 21 people in the U.S. developed severe allergic reactions to Covid-19 vaccines in the first nine days that the shots were rolled out, federal health authorities said Wednesday.

The rate is far higher than for the seasonal flu vaccine. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said, however, the severe reactions were rare and didn’t result in any deaths, and encouraged use of the shots. The cases were out of more than 1.9 million people who received a Covid-19 vaccine between Dec. 14 and 23, 2020, the CDC said in a study published in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The rate of 11.1 cases of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction, for every million Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in those nine days compares with the rate of 1.3 cases for every million doses of flu vaccine, CDC officials said in a conference call with reporters. Still, the risk of anaphylaxis is low, said Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases who is leading the agency’s Covid-19 vaccination efforts.
