Sir Michael McBride says there is a 'certainty of long-term harm to many children' from not attending school.

Sir Michael said that now was the right time to take a more targeted approach to contact tracing in schools and said he was writing to explain why that was the case.

"School improves health, learning, socialisation and opportunities throughout childhood, adolescence and into adulthood."image source,Sir Michael McBride said there is a "certainty of long-term harm to many children" from not attending school The chief medical officer said that the overall risk of children becoming severely ill from Covid was extremely low.

"It is my professional opinion, which is shared by my chief medical officer colleagues across the UK, that very few, if any, children or teenagers will come to long-term harm from Covid due solely to attending school," he said.
