Pandemic aid kept millions of Americans out of poverty last year, new Census Bureau data show. Without the first two rounds of stimulus checks, 11.7 million more people would have fallen beneath the poverty line.

The Census Bureau report showing the broad impact of last year’s aid comes as Congress debates additional social spending, includingThe Urban Institute projects the annual U.S. poverty rate will be cut nearly in half, from 13.9% in 2018 to 7.7%, in 2021.

The study estimates that the combined effects of select benefit programs and payments reduced the poverty rate in 2021 from 23.1% to 7.7%. The combined impact of those government programs and payments is projected to reduce poverty in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to the study.

US already had 40M below poverty lines. Without the first two rounds of stimulus checks, it would have been 50M, ie 1 out every 6 Americans.
