Nearly a third of the nurses who've died of coronavirus in the US are Filipino, even though Filipino nurses make up just 4% of the nursing population nationwide, according to a recent report from the largest nurses' union in the country.

A recent report from the largest nurses' union in the country revealed the disproportionate number of deaths. It's a jarring statistic researchers are working to understand and a tragedy families across the US and around the world are living with every day. Jhulan Banago feels it when he visits his mom's grave site every week and when he keeps putting out a plate of food for her at the dinner table every night.

Nurse: US hospitals are not ready for coronavirus 05:16Cortez, the president of National Nurses United, shared another theory with CNN. She says Filipino nurses are less likely to question authority and speak up even if, for example, they fear their employers aren't providing them with adequate protective equipment. That's especially true, she says, when they've come to the United States on work visas.

One of the most regretful thing that COVID response team did was dividing people in highrisk and lowrisk categories. It made it seem that majority citizens had no risks. Everyone is at risk, everyone may be at risk of dying and everyone is certainly at risk of killing someone.

This is a genocide man Please watch this voxdotcom video on Filipino nurses

algoriphagus This rightly should provoke as much anger as when the US decided the AUMF meant to kick off wars without even first assuring all troops could get their bulletproof plates; and uparmored vehicles for COIN. Equipment should be secondary to lives, lack of regard shows.

Great. Seeing as my sister is a covid ward nurse. Sounds like it’s just a matter of time.

no rightist should say anything under this. i KNOW you don't know what i'm sure you would definitely say.

It’s structural racism - we are just reluctant to name it -

I made a bad comment without reading the article, the comment was in bad taste and not nice. I deleted that comment, and I apologize for that. I in no way would want to disrespect the health care workers on the front line dealing with this pandemic. My condolences to the families

lorakolodny There is a high concentration of filipino nurses in nursing homes

CNN is news, right? Why must I read a 400 word article to get facts and reasons for the facts.

officialNWHA Is it the hours and stress? Why is this statistic occurring? Why isn't the nurses union addressing?

Fake China Network News CNN 🇨🇳 😂 US Civil disobedience should start because American votes were cancelled out by Chinese mail in ballots without voter signature confirmation. Demented Joe is not more popular than first black President Obama to get 10 million more votes

I was under the extended care of some amazing nurses, many being Filipina, at the San Diego VA spinal cord injury center. I hope hospital leaders are taking a serious look at this trend. Our nurses are the last real line of defense we have against COVID-19.

Ayaw !!!

Why is everything about race with you guys?

CNN is responsible for the majority of deaths. Anyone thinking outside the box sees it clearly.

Filipinos/Fililinas are very hard-working, family, extended- family/ Social group kind of people. Most likely not only their immune system was not strong enough from working hard and taking care of family, but thru their social activities they are most likely to catch Covid-19

Ironically none contracted the disease commuting between work and home.

So dont be a nurse and go back to the Philipines. Problem solved.

CatherineCNN, thank you for giving a voice and face to FilipinoAmerican healthcare providers, often forgotten by the news media in their pandemic coverage. Filipinos have been reliable frontline workers & their stories deserve recognition not just in digital, but on-air too.

Heart breaking.

Man this shit keep hitting on back on us🤦🤦🤦

Are the Filipinos subjected to racial discrimination by forcing them to attend frontline service or are they offering to on their own?

Read carefully. This is how you go out of business.

You must do a story and let everyone know about cytodyn and they're therapeutic drug called leronlimab / vyrologix cytodyn is the cure for COVIDー19 .

😳

There must be a physiologic or biochemical reason for the reason, some scientist by this time must have a hypothesis as to cause and possible actions to take to reduce the fatality rate.

kpjpsp Filipina women took incredible care of my mother at the end of her life. That these women are bearing the brunt of this crisis is unthinkable.

You're acting as if COVID is race specific...

When they wait for Biden to take office, they will find that Biden they trust is not as good as they think

Are there more Filipino nurses working in elderly homes? Because that would explain it.

The BELOW is a man ETSshow or a pic of a man - COULD BE ANY PERSON but this one & the implications are PRETTY SICK INDEED = that LACKS SELF ESTEEM & a NEED TO FILL A VOID IN THE SOUL by posting a pic that SCREAMS 😩'look at me , look at me' EDUCATION OVERCOMES NOT A SICK SOUL

Lifestyle could also have an effect.

This is, in part, due to likelihood of heart disease and cancer being higher in the Filipino community, but also due to them being low-wage earners who need to work, no matter the conditions. This pandemic fucked over a lot of lower-middle-classmen.

CNN and its propaganda

FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR THE COVID. Take a test. You may have it even if you aren't sick! And then be afraid you are going to DIE. FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR

So sad all round though

Systemic racism.

Obviously it’s because of racism

Buried halfway through the article is the phucking answer. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Sad😔

+The worst of the filthy election in the US is not the massive voting of the dead, the disappearance of pendrives, the censorship of observers, the threats to witnesses, the addicted software, the sea of illegal ballots. The worst is the press saying it was okay

We should ban this racist virus, maybe pay off all its college loans.

Pleassseeee stop tweeting about Trump.

😭😭😭😭😭😭

Do you guys divide everything you look at into sections of race and sex?

💪💪💪

You mean overseas workers who have been pushing American wages lower for nurses

Oh this has got to be Trumps fault some kind of way. I mean, Filipino nurses? Come on man. This tragedy is made for blaming him.

Genetic component of the virus

I know a nurse locally that has Corona and her husband does too. Wilkes Barre PA here

General citizens of the World ought to inspire them and encourage them and applaud their activities thenever they will remain fit both mentally and physically.

I know covid beat the flu in an intergalactic battle but is it also racist now and a night owl

So...are they not wearing masks & social Distancing?

So sad!

The true unsung heroes. Thank you all for what you do.

Trump doesn't care.

95% only bad news(

Are fillipinos disproportionately nurses?

silly CNN, why send old twitter to here, no news for you?🤣🤣🤣

2020 has The worse statistics

What a sad statistic. But so sad all round.

May their souls rest in peace 🙏

May their souls rest in peace

MatthewSoerens Here is the hard truth doctors don’t know why some people die and others don’t. There are theories but that’s all they are. As Americans we want certainty but it just isn’t there. This virus is still so new. Regardless, all of our healthcare workers r heroes.

I recorded this original song during the Coronavirus pandemic. Isolated, I recorded this song live on lead guitar with my own backing tracks My song is dedicated to everyone on the front lines fighting this virus YouTube COVID19 CovidVaccine Covid_19

angela_rye I'm not surprised that Non-Caucasian American nurses are dying at higher rates from Covid than Caucasian American nurses.

We pray for them 🙏

Admitting up front I don't know anything about the Philippines. Is it possible that their (guessing this is the case) lower level of medical care and standard of living does not given them some of the immunities that Americans do via vaccinations and improved general health?

My heart goes out to those who lost life and loved ones. RIP

Wonder why..

Scare tactics yet again. Where is the science and the source of your data?

But someone was trying to stop all immigrants of Color from entering the US. Ironically if you look at frontline workers the majority of them are immigrants from multiple generations. The stupidity of racism is self destructive!

Are you going to report on the daily case numbers in Illinois? Or only in Florida because it fits your narrative?

CNN (China News Network 🇨🇳) is fake news. 💯This entire story is make believe bull shit. 🙏🏾🇺🇸

This is not helping but at least those white supremacist will be filled with gratitude

4% nationwide, 60% in los angeles

So?

A good journalist would have posted their ages. People are MORE than their ethnicity or nationality

Part of my family is Filipino, and I havent heard anything about covid from them. We just celebrated my aunts 50th day and imagine that.. nobody got sick. Leave my family out of your bullshit argument.

First it was black and brown communities Now it's Filipinos Typical race baiting cnn

Most Flips are tRump supporters if that tells you anything.

There is so much we don’t know about Covid19, only a FOOL wouldn’t take this threat seriously

Smh this is textbook Systematic Covidism

🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am heartbroken over the brave health workers getting sick or dying while they try to save lives of the idiots that still refuse to wear a mask. WEAR A FCKN MASK. IT’S EASY.

Thats because they are the best, hardest working nurses that I have worked with

Why ?

4% more like 90% idk what they are talking about. Not in Illinois.

我看到我的同事一个一个的变成了我的病人! 某个美国护士

anildash The memorial website mentioned in the article is worth a visit: The historical context 'why they came' page is good, too:

some of these comments in this thread are fucking disgusting. fuck y’all. praying for my pinoy ppl risking their lives.

Yet, in many states, Governors (D and R), via hospital administrators, are saying it is difficult to maintain staffing in hospitals - but that staff are not getting infected in the hospital; rather in the community. Complete BS. They only say this so they don't pay workers comp.

Wow!

Naughty naughty, what % are they of ICU Nurses? ( contact with Coronavirus patients)

So does this corrupt, p.o.s. have lint in his mouth from being in China’s pocket? Or maybe he’s smoking Hunter’s crack? Either way, my houseplant has more brain cells.....

sad to hear______ those of goodness evolve, 'higher'; the spiritual knowledge!

We Nigerians are so happy you’re showing the world how wicked our leaders are here in Nigeria please keep doing good🙏🏼

That is interesting.. I wonder why..

Where do you get this shit

why would the mainstream media need fact-checking and dispute labels if they were in control? they wouldn't!!! they are trying to maintain the deep state narrative for the left and IT'S NOT WORKING! THEY ARE PANICKING, NEXT WILL BE SHUTDOWNS OF ALL CONSERVATIVES ACCTS GET READY

Covid is racist again guys
