Rich Western countries lobby hard to prevent developing countries from accessing Covid-19 vaccines

If you thought a global pandemic was enough to ward off the ruthless capitalist tendencies of large pharmaceutical companies and their allied governments, you would be wrong.

Western countries are trying to block poorer countries from accessing speedy access to the Covid-19 vaccine. The president of Doctors Without Borders has urged countries to “stop obstructing and show the leadership required to deliver on the ‘global solidarity’ they have so often declared during this pandemic.”

When the vaccines started rolling out towards the end of last year, it looked as if, for a moment, pharmaceutical companies could bask in that rarest of commodities for the industry: public goodwill. "Bill Gates dedicated his entire professional life to ruthlessly consolidating his monopoly, why on earth would he share vaccines," said oneWhen Gates was running Microsoft, he was deeply wedded to the idea that patents could never be broken, and it's a mantra he has largely continued. Gates is now using his significant clout over the global Covid-19 response to stop generic vaccines being made in developing countries.

CDC reviewing higher COVID-19 death toll from independent group, considering revising official count -WalenskyThe U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reviewing an estimate of global COVID-19 deaths from the University of Washington that is more than double the official count to determine if the CDC figures should be revised, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a Friday press briefing. A number of independent groups have reviewed the numbers and come out lower. But those are ignored. Gee, what's different here? It doesn't matter.
