Federal judges are asking Congress for special funding of almost $113 million to prevent court buildings from being overrun by a “hostile incursion” similar to the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6

While the bulk of the requested funding is for physical security improvements and technology like video systems that the courts say could help “withstand a hostile incursion” like the storming of the Capitol, Mauskopf acknowledged that the $10 million proposal is linked to legislation the judicial branch requested last year that wouldof judges and their families from the internet.

The judiciary floated the plan to scrub judges’ personal information from the internet following the July 2020 killing of Daniel Anderl, the son of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas, at their New Jersey home. Authorities say the killer was Roy Den Hollander, a disgruntled attorney who posed as a FedEx delivery worker. He was later found dead, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Some legal experts and the American Civil Liberties Union have raised doubts about the constitutionality of the legislation, which has bipartisan support.by proposing it include parallel limits on publication of details about lawmakers, such as their addresses and mobile telephone numbers. The bill’s sponsors said they were open to such protections but adding them to the bill days before the end of the Congressional session would kill the legislation for the year.
