Airlines have lost the ability to extract as much money as possible from travelers. And their pricing computers may stay confused for some time to come.
Revenue management—the science of getting the highest price for an airline seat, hotel room or other perishable good or service—is based largely on historical data. With big-data computing, airlines know with surprising precision what the demand will be for the 2 p.m. flight to Chicago on the third Thursday of October. Except now they don’t, since so much of revenue management...
Worse things could happen. They’re horrible.
As far as I know, airlines rely on a very delicate balance between revenue and costs which are higher than in most businesses. Your headline implies that they take every opportunity to part customers with their money, which in my experience just isn't true.
Extract == Extort
😅 So true, they used algorithms that display prices based on the historic travel, and spending trends.
They don’t have to squeeze customers. They have a gov’t bailout!
2020 confuses even computers....
🇲🇲🇲🇲🇲🇲
Good!
Americans won’t be welcome travelling the world until their vaccinated - if there ever is one.
i hope Delta goes bankrupt. their service is poor and seating is terrible. fly an Asian airline. very clean and professional.
Wow what data mining reveals,,, computers have taken our quirks and figured out how to mine our wallets in ways,,,🤔😱🤪💩
Hey, how 'bout that executive order trump signed giving thousands suffering from the Covid economy? Just like Obama would do, don't you think? Clever.
Just wait until things “normalize” and everyone wants to use all of the points and miles currently building up in accounts!
Newsflash: airlines haven’t known shit about pricing or had a consistent consumer-friendly and margin-producing pricing model since forever.
Keep in mind, US airlines we’re making ginormous profits for a decade from junk-fees, gotcha-fees, change fees, bag fees & ripping off consumers..
That happens by following CCP lockdown rules.
Shhh
They nickel and dime you.
Oh, boo freakin’ hoo
Charge more for customers willing to fly without the covid safety measures on predetermined flight routes. I'd gladly pay more.
Poor machine learning practices. A brittle model is a bad model. They will claim it was both unforeseeable and unavoidable. But if there is a disparity in profitability we will know the truth.
When an aviation co meets, they should bolt the chairs to the floor, reduce the size of the table, turn off the ac And sit there for 12 hours. Then they might realise how bad travel has become. Cattle class was an insult to cattle
Hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha.
Algorithms! Ha!
After another (!) round of bailouts they got from the government, it’s about time the population caught a break 😂
They should use those computers to mine crypto in the meantime
I hope they all move to subscription-based models that would be totally rad
The crisis will loom. Unless the people pray without ceasing. Also, everyone says deep cleaning. Which is done when there's a new case. It's not what ones says, its what's done. This is like a complaining spouse who doesn't want divorce. The solution lies in reach & sight!
This article is kind of funny. I read this more as they don’t like what the algorithm is going to tell them if they lifted the price floor.
