Consumers will pay more to fly because of American Airlines, JetBlue deal, fed suit says

COVID-19 has thwarted the expected return of business travel and pushed flight prices down — for now. Holiday travel bookings are already on the rise.American and JetBlue say they have started 58 new routes from four airports in the Northeast, added flights on other routes, and plan new international routes through 2022 because of the partnership.

“These obstacles to growth led us to an unlikely alliance with American Airlines which, even as the world’s largest carrier, also has not been able to compete with Delta Air Lines’ and United Airline’s dominance in the Northeast,” Hayes said. The airlines call their partnership the Northeast Alliance. It lets American and JetBlue sell seats on each other’s flights and give customers reciprocal benefits in the separate frequent-flyer programs.

US sues to stop deal between American Airlines and JetBlueThe Justice Department is suing to stop a partnership formed by American Airlines and JetBlue. Government antitrust lawyers say the deal would reduce competition and lead to higher fares. The airlines say there is no evidence of that. A fairer world is possible. If the fares are higher, then maybe the government wouldn't need to bail out the airlines from time to time. And higher fares would help keep the bus-people off the planes. More greed & consolidation to screw the middle class. This must end.
