A Confederate monument that’s been a divisive symbol at the University of Mississippi was being removed from a prominent spot on the Oxford campus. It will be taken to a Civil War cemetery.

FILE - In this Feb. 23, 2019 file photo a Confederate soldier monument stands at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. The monument will be moved from the prominent spot at the university to a Civil War cemetery in a secluded part of the Oxford campus.

“It’s not going to create a shrine to the Confederacy,” University of Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boyce told The Associated Press on June 24 at the state Capitol. “People will have to judge that when they see the end product.” The estimated cost of the move is $1.2 million, which will be paid with private donations, not public money, the board said.

In December, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History board approved architectural and engineering plans for moving the monument. In January, the College Board delayed a vote on the matter, with members saying they wanted more information.

See, this is how you handle stuff like this, move it to a more appropriate location. A peaceful compromise. Can we learn from this?

Growing up in the deepest south, I always felt acute shame seeing any of these statues, the Confederate flag & what they represent. Surely there are many other whites who feel the same.

This is appropriate. Any statue representing that war needs to be in historical context

AP! That’s actually where these symbols of the Confederate Government belong In the Cemetery. That Confederate Government fought & LOST TO AMERICA, as they depended on their ECONOMY based on SLAVERY! There’s ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to promote LOSERS who KILLED AMERICANS!

I’d crush it, like we did in the civil war!

RIP !

The University Grays buried there fought at Gettysburg. That's where the statue belongs not at the entrance of the campus.

and that is where it belongs...

These statutes, if they belong at all, belong in Battlefield Memorials. Move them to the battlefield site connected w the person depicted by the statute.

its not divisive

LEAVE MY STATUE ALONE GEORGE SORROS

Good.

Good repurposing.

Civil War cemetery? So we burying America’s troops with war enemies and putting statues up to honor them now?

See u didnt have to rip it down. People want to rip things down cause they want history to repeat😠

FindSomethingNew

and half buried?

a reasonable and appropriate response! Nicely handled by all involved.

too bad they're glorifying it in its new place on campus

if metal, melt it if stone, break it into gravel if wood, burn it !

Seems reasonable... Imagine if more people were reasonable

Yes cemetery is where these racist epithets belong

Will it be buried there?

Should be taken to the dump.

Better to move them than tear them down.

Appropriate.
