How do you bring back a struggling neighborhood? A coalition of community groups wants to try something new in Chicago: Take hundreds of unused city lots and quickly build 1,000 affordable, single-family homes. WBEZ

that called for a"New Homes for Chicago 2.0 program." And she seems to agree with the notion that something big is needed.

"The challenge of building a thousand homes is a two-sided coin," said Neri."Building homes is one side of the equation. You have to have qualified buyers on the other side of the equation." From left to right, Richard Townsell, executive director of the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation; Denita Robinson, North Lawndale Homeowners Association; and Amy Totsch, lead organizer with United Power for Action and Justice.Denita Robinson sees no lack of potential homeowners in her neighborhood. Robinson graduated from North Lawndale College Prep Charter High School in 2003. Afterwards, she went to college and then came back and bought a home.

She said many properties in the neighborhood are in poor condition. It's hard to get a mortgage in the community. Speculators sit on properties.

WBEZ We also need to see how all the pieces fit together. Without a comprehensive grid of protected bike lanes & transit connecting vacant lots to the job centers in the new megaprojects of the superloop this is lipstick on a pig.

WBEZ Vote out democrats

WBEZ Actually do good for the average man? Never happen. What's the catch? Triple the price of trailer?

WBEZ Finally an idea to help others .... where Bezos in all this with 166.3 billions to help out Chicago

WBEZ Nice, I hope this happens. The Nehemian homes are the ones Raj Chetty studied I believe. Related... opportunity atlas.

WBEZ WPA. Local economies need subsidies and governments charge Walmart, tax plastic bags

WBEZ Or just redo them. Make them modern and hire grounds keeper that will do their job of maintaining it... Fix everything when it should be.

WBEZ Chicago neighborhoods used to be nice, when white people lived in them. Even Michelle Obama admits this is true.

WBEZ Landlords are a scourge on humanity. Taking shelter, a basic human need, and turning it into a commodity at the whim of the markets. Landlords take money and give nothing back. If they could find a way to charge you for the air you are breathing now, they would do it

WBEZ Malls

WBEZ Bold ideas come to folks who think together for for the good of a neighborhood

WBEZ Habitat_org

WBEZ So is the city is going to get into the landlord business? Or are they going to sell those homes to people who can't get a mortgage? Either way it sounds like a state-owned and operated real-estate venture. Makes no sense.

WBEZ joshthedavid I think this is right up your alley.

WBEZ More free stuff isn't gonna make those neighborhoods any better. Those people need jobs.

WBEZ End the war on drugs. Stop ruining lives over a plant.

WBEZ Do it already. This is a great idea. It's a beautiful area to build. Come on movie stars put your money where your big mouth is

WBEZ Or ball fields? Playgrounds?

WBEZ Affordable housing is so lacking in most areas. It's imperative we fix this. We know what the solutions are now we must prioritize them. When most areas in the nation see working full time and being unable to afford a 1 bd apt let alone a family and home there's clearly a problem

WBEZ Guessing baby daddies stop trying to get 100 women pregnant, be responsible and get a job is a good start.
