At Sunday's Emmys, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Breonna Taylor were remembered. Winners encouraged viewers to vote. And essential workers grounded the show.

2020 Emmy winner “Schitt’s Creek” went from cult obscurity to fan favorite. Like the series itself, that feel-good story is a solace right now.

Only a few stars appeared at Staples Center in Los Angeles for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards. Among them were Anthony Anderson, left, and Sterling K. Brown, who wears a Black Lives Matter shirt. It was one of many ways to bring levity to a deadly serious year. Divisive governance, systemic racism, the rise of white nationalism and the terror of police brutality was hardly lost during a ceremony in which the poignant limited HBO series “Watchmen” won several awards.

Damon Lindelof, accepting the limited series Emmy for “Watchmen,” wears a shirt that says “Remember Tulsa ’21,” in commemoration of the 1921 race massacre that took place in Tulsa and was a touchstone for the series.
