From produce clerks to personal shoppers to warehouse stockers, millions of grocery workers across the U.S. are keeping food on the shelves throughout this pandemic for those of us hunkering at home. Their work is essential — needed and valued — and yet, many say they don't feel safe.better protections, including paid sick leave and ready access to personal protective supplies, such as hand sanitizer and wipes.
Visual journalist Sarah Mirk checked in with a sampling of grocery workers from across the nation to hear more about their experiences on the job in recent weeks and what they say needs to change.

I went to Sprouts Farmers Market today and upon grazing the bulk section discovered they had bagged all the bulk items into 1 lb bags into the bins. Smart! Just getting some millet for the Painted Buntings in our backyard 😀
Costumers don't give %%$ they still go grocery shopping as if nothing is happening, the whole family roaming at rhe stores, the daily shoppers, the oblivious ones that use the stores as their private phone cabin, etc. It's stressful.

This is so true. My son is working at Safeway and he also has Asphergers. He is quite stressed because he sees black and white, right and wrong. He says people are either full hazmat or nothing at all. He doesn't feel safe.

Most of them are working because they can't afford to take off. 'I'm afraid of dying or bring home COVID19 and killing a family member' isn't a valid excuse to miss work or collect unemployment. If it was, most stores would be closed.

In the beginning, my local cashier reminded me to wait at the end of the conveyor behind the line while he scanned and bagged my items. When he was done and gave me my total, I put the money on the belt. He was not amused.

Grocery Workers are also a frontliner
grocery aisles are so narrow in NYC - i feel unsafe just going to the store for a short amount of time. it makes me really worry for the workers.
They dont feel safe because they are not safe. Same for all the front lines of this war. Shoppers, drivers, delivery, cleaners , doormen (rich people are actually still making them work) grocery staff. 90% no healthcare. Saving lives of those elitists who call them 'unskilled'.
And yet the well healed ‘conservatives’ don’t believe they’re lives are even worth $15 an hour.
I thank them every time I go. Aldo thank pharmacy workers.
