This is the notion thatbetween a woman’s earnings and a man’s expands dramatically once she has kids. Unfortunately, it’s not terribly surprising. Though men are contributing more than ever, women have always been responsible for more of the child raising responsibilities.
Giving mothers the support they need to balance their work and family life now will give the next generation an advantage here. For me personally, it was really important for me to show my two kids examples that both their mother and father were out working and contributing. The motherhood penalty exists because of perception, not because the quality of women’s work declines after they become mothers. We know this because it even costs.
At the end of the day, women are paid less for a number of reasons, none of which have to do with their level of education or their capabilities. Solving the pay gap will require thoughtful changes on many things we’ve long taken for granted in the corporate world: after all, many business norms were formed before women were even in the workplace.
