Chinese doctors using plasma therapy on coronavirus, WHO says 'very valid' approach

SHANGHAI/GENEVA - Doctors in Shanghai are using infusions of blood plasma from people who have recovered from the coronavirus to treat those still battling the infection, reporting some encouraging preliminary results, a Chinese professor said on Monday.

The coronavirus epidemic is believed to have originated in a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, and has so far killed 1,770 people and infected more than 70,000 in mainland China. “So it must be given at the right time, because it mops up the virus in the system, and it just gives the new patient’s immune system a vital push at the time it needs it. But it has to be carefully timed and it’s not always successful.”

Using their immunoglobulin M to help fight sick patients .. that’s clever but risky (donated blood many have other infections)

The WHO recently said the long incubation was actually a result of people getting reinfected. What good will serum do if a person can get reinfected. In fact it looks like reinfected people might do more poorly, which would be a good reason to NOT get survivor serum.

My condolences to all affected. It's amazing how hard people are working to stop this. They are just people faced with a monstrous killer.

But it has been reported that people can catch it a second time, and how deadly it is because of the damage to the heart it caused?!

I thought people didn't really build up antibodies to this though, and that's why people who've recovered can easily get reinfected?

Experimenting ? mutating the viral infection ? Making it harder to cure? I wouldn’t want to be sick in China. Scary!!!

10k recovered vs 76k infected. Plasma is nice, but it's only a drop in the bucket. That's not a cure.

I thought they were saying those that had it were being reinfected?No immunity bc you had it before?
