BEIJING — China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday said it wasn’t aware of the controversy surrounding tennis professional Peng Shuai, who disappeared after accusing a former top official of sexually abusing her. The ministry has consistently disavowed knowledge of the issue since it broke as a major global story earlier this week.

I cannot believe that they are not aware. No member of the Chinese Communist Party would accept that his/her daughter would be sexually assaulted by some politician of the Party regardless of his rank. So why do they accept it for Ms Peng Shuai?
See that's what's different between China and the US: in the US we let that go on for 20+ years and accusations from multiple gold medalists before we finally believe victims. And then we gaslight the athletes into thinking nothing happened.
